Admissions Requirements

The Acupuncture Program welcomes a diverse population of students from all economic, cultural and geographical backgrounds. We seek students who have the potential for working in a compassionate manner, who share a desire to use all facets of themselves in their study and practice of Chinese medicine, and who have a commitment to use their knowledge to promote health and healing and to contribute to the profession of acupuncture.

All applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Have completed a minimum of 60 semester credit hours from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education prior to entry into the Acupuncture Program. At least 15 of these credit hours must be in general education with a distribution of courses including one course in each of the following subject areas: written and oral communication; quantitative principles; humanities and fine arts; natural and physical sciences; social and behavioral sciences. If the applicant has a minimum of 60 credits, but the 15 credits of general education coursework do not include a course in each of the specified areas, these general education credits may be completed concurrently with the baccalaureate portion of the program, at an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

  • Be a U.S. citizen or alien lawfully admitted for permanent residence in the U.S., or be eligible for a student visa.

  • Provide evidence of English proficiency if English is not their first language. (See "Internationally Educated Applicants" on page 14 of the Acupuncture Program catalog for details.)

Qualifications for Admission

Each applicant is carefully evaluated by the Admissions Department. In addition to the above requirements, applicants should possess the following qualifications:

  • Have the potential for academic success.

  • Be in good physical health, capable of meeting the demands of the program.

  • Have the ability to communicate effectively and professionally.

  • Conduct him/herself in a professional and responsible manner.

  • Demonstrate maturity, self-awareness, and good judgment.

Admission to the Swedish Institute is based on careful consideration of the above qualifications as well as of college records, references, admissions essay and the personal interview. Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) are not required.
