Acupuncture Graduates Making a Life
Since most of our students already have work experience when they come to school here,
they are looking for ways to do more than support themselves, they want to keep the life
in making a living. They are also looking for meaningful ways to contribute to the well
being of others. How do they express their passion once they leave school and return to
their communities?
Here is a sampling of what graduates are doing today in the community.
Attorney: Helder Coelho, LAc
Looking for a way to have a positive impact on the world, Helder Coelho worked in public
interest law for 13 years, until he had the sense that it was no longer a sustainable way of
life for him. By listening to himself, he found his way to Swedish Institute and is now
creating the change he wants to see in the world. Read

Musician: Margaret Steele, LAc
A
Juilliard-trained musician who has played in grand music halls around the world, Margaret
Steele still has a way of emanating into the space around her. She finds that the way she uses
needles to move Qi from one acupuncture point to the next is what determines the beauty and
transforming power of this ancient healing art, much the way moving from one note to the next
creates a transcendent piece of music.

Developing a Sustainable Life
Ayan Rivera (’04) and Liza Pascal (’04) met when they began to study acupuncture at
Swedish Institute.
Liza is focusing on acupuncture for women’s health and Ayan is doing an apprenticeship in acupuncture for sports
medicine in Colorado.

Beverly Hutchinson, L.Ac., ('99) was in the first graduating class of the

door of a brownstone in Harlem seeking the help of an
acupuncturist for herself.
